If you haven’t been living under a rock under for the last 8 months, you will noticeably feel a different vibe around the city of Leeds. A weekly supplement of Premier League-esque football being donned on the Elland Road turf, with chants of “Pontus Jansson’s magic” echoing. This is a team that’s really not taking prisoners this year.
The promotion push for Leeds United is the best it has been for the last 14 years since their relegation from the Premier League in 2005. With this in mind, we thought we really should take a step back and appreciate all that’s been going on at Elland Road over the last few years. So where exactly do you start?
You would need a lifetime to possibly explain all the on-goings which Leeds United have faced since their relegation, with point deductions, bankruptcy, some very peculiar player signing and tours of countries covered in warzones leading Leeds from being Division 1 Champions to a laughing stock.
2017 is believed to be the turning point by many of the faithful fans, with Mr Andrea Radrizzani buying all 100% of the club off a certain Mr Massimo Cellino. Andrea, bought back Leeds United Ladies, followed by the Elland Road stadium, which Leeds hadn’t actually owned since 2004 when they were forced to sell it to cover costs after failing to make the Champions League that season.
Moving on to 2018 and the appointment of a Mr Marcelo Bielsa AKA “El Loco” – The crazy one. There’s a fresh vibe around the city, with the team playing actual football, dominating possession with chants of ‘whey’ every time a ball is passed between players. This is something unheard of in previous years. Bielsa agreed to become Leeds United’s highest paid manager ever on a 2 year deal with the possibility of a 3rd before the start of the 2018/19 season and we can really see why he was so wanted by the club! This is a man that’s turned a 13th place team last year into a team currently sitting at the summit of the Championship with 9 games left to play and only a few player changes!
With the unbelievable football being played on the pitch, there has been some alarming stats which fans have only been able to dream of in previous years. Courtesy of LUFCDATA on Twitter, they pointed out that Leeds’ record after scoring first in any championship game is 100% perfect, as they have won all 18 games, picking up 54 points, scoring 40 and only conceding 6 – This is a record over all 4 professional English Leagues, and the top 2 in France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
With the chance of promotion firmly in Leeds’ hands, it’s up to the squad to decide their fate, as it all comes down to the final 9 games of the season. All of us at Velocity are firmly behind the team to secure promotion!
