Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship Funding

You can get help from the government to pay for apprenticeship training.

The amount you get depends on whether you pay the apprenticeship levy or not. You pay the levy if you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year.

You can also claim up to £4,000 as an incentive payment if you hire an apprentice that starts employment after 30 April 2021.

What if I don’t pay the apprenticeship levy?

You pay 5% towards the cost of training and assessing your apprentice. You need to:

  • agree a payment schedule with Velocity Academy
  • pay them directly for the training

The government will pay the rest (95%) up to the funding band maximum. They’ll pay it directly to Velocity Academy

You could be eligible for extra funding depending on both your and your apprentice’s circumstances.

What if I do pay the apprenticeship levy?

You’ll receive funds to spend on training and assessing your apprentices. The government will add 10%.

The Digital Apprenticeship Service – Government Portal

You can register for an apprenticeship service account to access funds or pay for training.

If you pay the apprenticeship levy and use an apprenticeship training agency, you cannot use funds from your digital account to pay for the training agency’s services.

From January 2020, all employers regardless of size can now access the government’s digital portal for arranging apprenticeships, this was previously only available to levy paying organisations. Creating an account is simple and straight-forward. Once you’re set up you can manage apprenticeships for your business with greater control and ownership over training providers. You will be able to apply for your potential apprenticeship incentives directly from this online service. We have a team specialising in the apprenticeship on-boarding process that will be on hand to help you with this service if required.
